English tenses can feel like a maze — but most learners only need to master a handful of core tenses to communicate clearly and confidently in everyday situations.
🧱 Start with the three basics
- Present simple — facts and routines: I work, she lives, they play
- Past simple — finished actions: I worked, she lived, they played
- Future with "will" or "going to" — plans and predictions: I will call, I'm going to visit
These three cover the vast majority of everyday conversation. Once they're solid, other tenses build naturally on top.
⏱️ Present continuous: actions happening now
Use present continuous (am/is/are + verb-ing) for something happening right now or around now: "I am learning English," "She is working today."
🔗 Present perfect: past meets present
Present perfect (have/has + past participle) connects a past action to the present moment: "I have finished my homework," "They have lived here for five years." This tense often confuses learners because many languages don't have a direct equivalent — practice with real examples is the fastest way to build a feel for it.
📝 A simple way to practise tenses
- Pick one tense at a time — don't try to master them all at once
- Write 5 sentences about your own life using that tense
- Say the sentences out loud
- Try a short quiz or game focused on that tense
- Move to the next tense only once the first feels comfortable
⚠️ Common tense mistakes to watch for
- Using present simple for actions happening right now ("I go to the shop now" instead of "I'm going to the shop now")
- Mixing past simple and present perfect ("I have seen him yesterday" instead of "I saw him yesterday")
- Forgetting the "-ed" ending in regular past tense verbs
The fastest way to master tenses isn't memorising rules — it's using each tense repeatedly in real sentences until it feels natural.
İngilizce zamanlar (tenses) bir labirent gibi hissettirebilir — ama çoğu öğrencinin günlük hayatta net ve kendinden emin bir şekilde iletişim kurmak için sadece birkaç temel zamanı öğrenmesi yeterlidir.
🧱 Üç temelle başlayın
- Geniş zaman (Present simple) — gerçekler ve rutinler: I work, she lives, they play
- Geçmiş zaman (Past simple) — bitmiş eylemler: I worked, she lived, they played
- "Will" veya "going to" ile gelecek zaman — planlar ve tahminler: I will call, I'm going to visit
Bu üç zaman günlük konuşmanın büyük çoğunluğunu kapsar. Bunlar sağlam olduğunda, diğer zamanlar da doğal olarak üzerine inşa edilir.
⏱️ Şimdiki zaman (Present continuous): şu anda olan eylemler
Şu anda veya şu sıralarda olan bir şey için şimdiki zamanı (am/is/are + fiil-ing) kullanın: "I am learning English" (İngilizce öğreniyorum), "She is working today" (Bugün çalışıyor).
🔗 Yakın geçmiş zaman (Present perfect): geçmiş şimdiyle buluşur
Yakın geçmiş zaman (have/has + geçmiş zaman ortacı) geçmişteki bir eylemi şimdiki anla bağlar: "I have finished my homework" (Ödevimi bitirdim), "They have lived here for five years" (Burada beş yıldır yaşıyorlar).
- Şu anda olan eylemler için geniş zaman kullanmak ("I go to the shop now" yerine "I'm going to the shop now" demek gerekir)
- Geçmiş zaman ile yakın geçmiş zamanı karıştırmak ("I have seen him yesterday" yerine "I saw him yesterday" demek gerekir)
- Düzenli fiillerde geçmiş zaman "-ed" ekini unutmak
Zamanları öğrenmenin en hızlı yolu kuralları ezberlemek değildir — her zamanı gerçek cümlelerde tekrar tekrar kullanarak doğal hale getirmektir.
