Prepositions are small words — like in, on, at, by and since — but they cause big confusion for English learners. The good news is that once you learn a few clear patterns, prepositions become much easier to use correctly.

🔎 What is a preposition?

A preposition shows the relationship between a noun (or pronoun) and another word in a sentence — usually about place, time or direction. For example: "The book is on the table," or "We meet at 9am."

🕒 Prepositions of time: in, on, at

  • in — months, years, seasons: in July, in 2026, in winter
  • on — days and dates: on Monday, on 5th June
  • at — exact times: at 7pm, at midnight, at lunchtime

📍 Prepositions of place: in, on, at

  • in — inside a space: in the box, in London, in the car
  • on — on a surface: on the table, on the wall, on the bus
  • at — a specific point: at the door, at the bus stop, at home

⚠️ Common preposition mistakes

Many learners say "I am agree with you" instead of "I agree with you," or "married with" instead of "married to." These are called dependent prepositions — the verb or adjective always pairs with the same preposition, so the best way to learn them is by reading and hearing them used correctly, again and again.

A simple trick

When you learn a new verb or adjective, learn its preposition at the same time — as one phrase, not two separate words. For example, don't just learn "interested" — learn "interested in."

🔁 Practise little and often

Prepositions are best learned through repetition and real examples, not by memorising long lists. Short, regular practice sessions — even five minutes a day — work far better than one long session.

Edatlar (prepositions) — in, on, at, by ve since gibi — küçük kelimelerdir, ama İngilizce öğrenenler için büyük karışıklığa yol açarlar. İyi haber şu ki, birkaç net kalıbı öğrendiğinizde, edatları doğru kullanmak çok daha kolay hale gelir.

🔎 Edat (preposition) nedir?

Bir edat, bir cümlede bir isim (veya zamir) ile başka bir kelime arasındaki ilişkiyi gösterir — genellikle yer, zaman veya yön hakkında. Örneğin: "The book is on the table" (Kitap masanın üzerinde), veya "We meet at 9am" (Saat 9'da buluşuyoruz).

🕒 Zaman edatları: in, on, at

  • in — aylar, yıllar, mevsimler: in July, in 2026, in winter
  • on — günler ve tarihler: on Monday, on 5th June
  • at — kesin saatler: at 7pm, at midnight, at lunchtime

📍 Yer edatları: in, on, at

  • in — bir alanın içinde: in the box, in London, in the car
  • on — bir yüzeyin üzerinde: on the table, on the wall, on the bus
  • at — belirli bir nokta: at the door, at the bus stop, at home

⚠️ Yaygın edat hataları

Birçok öğrenci "I agree with you" yerine "I am agree with you" veya "married to" yerine "married with" der. Bunlara bağımlı edatlar (dependent prepositions) denir — fiil veya sıfat her zaman aynı edatla eşleşir, bu yüzden öğrenmenin en iyi yolu, onları defalarca doğru kullanılırken okumak ve duymaktır.

Basit bir püf noktası

Yeni bir fiil veya sıfat öğrendiğinizde, edatını da aynı anda öğrenin — iki ayrı kelime olarak değil, tek bir ifade olarak. Örneğin, sadece "interested" öğrenmeyin — "interested in" öğrenin.

🔁 Az ama sık pratik yapın

Edatlar, uzun listeleri ezberlemekle değil, tekrar ve gerçek örneklerle en iyi şekilde öğrenilir. Kısa, düzenli pratik oturumları — günde beş dakika bile olsa — tek bir uzun oturumdan çok daha etkilidir.
