Many children can read every word on the page and still struggle to answer questions about it. Comprehension is a skill that grows with practice, and parents can help a great deal without any special teaching knowledge.

💬 Talk before, during and after

Before reading, look at the title and picture and predict what will happen. Pause now and then to ask what's going on, and afterwards ask your child to retell the story in their own words.

🔦 Find the evidence in the text

When answering a question, teach your child to point to the exact line that supports their answer. "How do you know?" is one of the most useful questions you can ask.

  • Ask "How do you know?" after every answer
  • Underline the question word before answering

❓ Know the question words

Words like who, what, where, when, why and how tell you what kind of answer is needed. "Why" questions usually need a reason, often using the word "because".
