Phonics teaches children that letters stand for sounds, and that sounds can be blended together to read words. A few relaxed minutes a day at home reinforces what your child learns in class.

🔊 Say the sounds, not the letter names

Say the sound a letter makes ("mmm", "sss") rather than its alphabet name, and follow the way your child's school teaches it. If you're unsure, ask the teacher or look at the school's phonics guidance.

🧩 Blend and split words every day

Sound out a simple word one sound at a time — c-a-t — then blend the sounds together to say it. Then reverse it: say a word and ask your child to break it into its sounds.

📚 Read decodable books aloud

Choose books matched to the sounds your child already knows so they can sound out most words themselves. Let them lead, and praise effort. Year 1 children in England take a short phonics screening check in June, but the main aim is simply confident reading.
