Whether it's a KS2 story or a GCSE essay, students who plan for five minutes usually write clearer, better-organised answers than those who start writing straight away. Here's a simple method that fits into exam time.
🎯 Decide what you're actually saying
Read the task twice, underline the key words, and write one sentence that answers it (for an essay) or sums up what happens (for a story). Every paragraph should then support that sentence.
🧱 Order three to five ideas
Jot down three to five ideas or events and number them in the best order. Beginning, middle and end for a story; point, evidence and explanation for an essay.
- Write one sentence that answers the question first
- Number 3–5 ideas in order before you start
⏰ Keep to time and leave a minute to check
Decide roughly how many minutes each part gets and glance at the clock between paragraphs. Leave the last minute to check spelling, punctuation and that the ending links back to the question.
