Families new to the UK often find the school calendar confusing at first — different term names, half terms in the middle of nowhere, and INSET days that seem to appear without warning. Here's what it all actually means.

📖 The three terms, and the half term in the middle of each

Most English schools run on three terms: Autumn (September–December), Spring (January–March/April) and Summer (April–July). Each term has a week-long break roughly in the middle, called "half term" — the one in late October is the first of the year.

🚫 INSET days: a school day with no pupils

An INSET day (In-Service Education and Training) is a normal working day for teachers — staff training, planning, or assessment — but pupils don't attend. Schools set their own INSET days, so they vary between schools even in the same town, which is why one child might be off while a neighbour's child isn't.

  • Three terms a year: Autumn, Spring, Summer — each with a half term
  • INSET days vary school to school, even in the same area

📌 Where to actually find your own school's exact dates

Every school publishes its own exact term dates (they differ slightly school to school) — usually on the school's own website under "term dates" or "calendar," or sent home in a letter at the start of the year. That is always the version to trust over a general calendar found online.
